Spanish Car Hire Guide
69Renting a car in Spain
If you have booked your holiday in Spain than first of all congratulations! It is a wonderful place to have your holiday and I'm sure that if you have planned it well you will have a fantastic time. I have been on several holidays to Spain and each one has been different but also brilliant. The example Barcelona is a wonderful place to go, and so is Madrid, but if you really want to see the country you need to get out into the countryside a little bit away from the cities so you can see how people really live in Spain – and Spanish rental cars are a great way to do this if you have the money.
However to do this you need to have some form of transport. The Spanish transport system isn't, but if you want more freedom than you need to decide on whether you want to either get a taxi everywhere or hire a rental car. My choice is to hire a rental car because I think it gives you a lot more freedom, and isn't really that much more expensive, even after you include anything such as insurance and petrol costs.
Choosing a rental company
Spanish rental cars come in many different forms and sizes though, so you need to decide on exactly what you need for rental car before you hire it. You also need to make sure that the company that you are renting from is a reputable company that will provide you with a good quality car for a reasonable price. This isn't always easy, but it has been made a lot easier by the fact that you can now look at reviews of the various rental companies online.
Before you even start looking for a Spanish rental company though, you need to think about when you want to rent it. Are you going to book online before you go, or are you going to wait until you get on holiday at the airport in Spain before you try and book a car or van? Usually it is a good idea to make sure you book your rental car before you get to Spain, because then you have a lot more choice, and read up on the reviews as well as usually paying a little bit less. That doesn't every rental company that you see as an airport straight rip you off, but in general they will be a bit more expensive.
Car insurance in Spain
You also need to think about your car insurance. It is nearly always a good idea to get a fully comprehensive insurance when you are on holiday so that you can be safe in the knowledge that if anything does go wrong you won't have to pay for it. You should also she read the rental agreement of the company you are renting from thoroughly before you commit to renting the car, so you know what happens if you have to bring it back late or if you do damage it.
Other things to consider
Whether you are in Valencia, Madrid or Barcelona or somewhere completely different Spain unless you are just going to spend all your time on the beach you will need some form of transport to get around. If you think you are only going to make a few journeys, then it may not be a good idea to get a rental car. However if you think you want to see the country and lots of the site then getting a rental car is nearly always a good idea.
However you do need to remember that it isn't the same driving in Spain as it is in England. But start you have to be at least 18 to start driving, and if you are below 25 you may find that a lot of companies won't rent to you. You also have to remember that you will be driving on the other side of the road so you need to bear this in mind and if you aren't comfortable with doing this perhaps you shouldn't rent a car or at least get someone else to drive.

Spain can be the perfect place to hire a convertible to cruise around Tuscany. We started in Rome and drove north right up through to Siena where we were getting married. Watch out for the parking fines in small Italian towns and maybe think about getting your car insurance before you leave, it's much cheaper.
