Student Desk Information

If your re in the market for a student desk then you want something that meets a few select criteria. For example it needs to be the right height so that you can write on it for extended periods of time, have enough space for all your work and also a bit of storage space if possible. I've lived in student accommodation so know as well as you do how space is at a premium so a bit of storage can really help!

You also of course want it to be as cheap as possible to help that student budget through the rest of the term, and if possible have enough room for a computer screen. This has been made easier by the latest flat panels which don't take up nearly as much space, but some student computer desks are so small that you can barely fit these on let alone a dual monitor setup if you require it.

In this hub I'll be going through some of the choices you can make when buying student desks, as well as what to look for in a desk, how to make sure you don't over spend and how much you can expect to pay.

Students get a lot of stick these days but the reality is most of them work very hard! If you are going to be spending a lot of time at a desk not only do you want it comfortable so you can concentrate but it needs to be the right height so you don't pick up repetitive strain injuries if you are going to be spending a lot of the time typing or writing, which most students will.

Types of student desks

There are two main types of student desks. The first is the normal desk which is usually small and just used for writing, and then there is the computer desk. You can also get the old fold top desks that used to be in schools but modern versions, these are great if you don't have much space to put a desk but don’t provide much in the way of work space when you are studying or revising for exams!

The next thing you need to decide on is the colour. White student desks look very sleek and modern and don’t cost extra in most cases, so are a good choice. However they do show up marks more than most. If you are like I was and use your desk from everything from working to eating then it may not be a good choice! You can get a more traditional wood coloured desk or a black one; it really depends on your taste and what colours you already have in the room. One advantage of white is that tit does go with all the other colours so you don't have to worry about a clash (if you are worried about clashing colours anyway, I know I wasn't in my student times).

How much will they cost?

Student desks tend to be quite cheap because the market they are targeting doesn’t have a lot of money to spend. You can get a reasonable quality student desk for around £40, but it will only be small and may not be suitable for your needs. If you want to get a fully fledged workstation then you are going to have to pay a bit more - perhaps up to around £150 - but it will be worth it if it helps you get a better degree.

Generally the more you pay in a certain range of desks the higher quality you are likely to receive. With a student desk you may not be planning on using it for more than a few years though so this isn't necessarily something you should worry about - as long as it does the job for a relatively short amount of time then it might be worth saving a bit of your money for something more important like textbooks or even food! The most important thing is to decide on a budget before you start looking so that you can search knowing what is in your price range and immediately discount those that aren't. This will narrow down the amount of desks you have to look through immediately and help you to make a choice that won't break the bank. This is good practice for buying any kind of furniture; just make sure you stick to the budget religiously so that you avoid overspending.

Remember also to get a good office chair or student chair as they are called in some places. This is probably more important for your health than the desk so choose carefully and make sure it is the one for you.
